You have a Chinese Smartphone and you wonder why your GPS is not working really good? You spent houres and houres reading tutorials of how to fix the bad GPS on MTK 6589 chipsets? You want real GPS without A-GPS help? You are tired of manual downloading EPO Files??? Me too!

Here is a screenshot that I've done before:

As you can see..only 3 Satellites in use...and this was with EPO and A-GPS assist!!!

Ok..., lets start! This is my way of fixing the real GPS:

First you must have root access to your smartphone. Thats really important! So... if you dont know how to root your phone...ask Google! There a thousands of tutorials how to root all kind of phones.

If you have root access to your smartphone you first have to download some important tools from the playstore:
    • Mobile Uncle Tools (to get access to the Engineer menu of an MTK chipset)
    • Root Explorer e.g. ES File Explorer File Manager
    • GPS Test (for your visual result)
After you have downloaded the tools follow these steps:

1.) Start your root Explorer and navigate to: /data/misc
Rename these files: mtkgps.dat and EPO.DAT (only if you got it!?)

E.g. I renamed them to: OLD_mtkgps.dat and OLD_EPO.DAT like you can see in my Screenshot:

    2.) Then navigate to: /system/etc
    Rename this file: gps.conf

    E.g. I renamed it to OLD_gps.conf

3.) Now go to you Android system settings! Go to "Location access" and switch on "GPS satellites".

Now you can tab on the word "GPS satellites" where you can uncheck "GPS EPO assistance" and "A-GPS".

Thats really important because we want to fix the real GPS!!!

    4.) Now reboot your phone!

Now it´s time for the athletic part of the show!

5.) Leave your beloved home and walk to a good spot where you have real good view to the sky! Maybe a little hill or something like that.

6.) Start Mobile Uncle Tools and go to: Engineer Mode-->Engineer Mode (MTK)-->Location
Here you have two options: "Location Based Service" and "YGPS"

Important: If you have made some changes in the past like:
"Location Based Services"-->"AGPS"-->"Enable A-GPS" then go back there and disable A-GPS!!!

OK now its time to fix the real GPS!

    7.) Go to YGPS!

8.) Now place your phone on a good spot and wait..., wait and wait!
Important: This can take more then a few minutes!!!

If you are lucky...you now got your real GPS Fix!
You can see it on filled green bars and your phone also display a message when the fix is done!

(BTW: The Jiayu G3T got the fix in less then a minute!)

    9.)
Now leave the Mobile Uncle Tools.

10.) Start the GPS-Test App. If you have done everything right you will see how fast your chinese smartphone now will get a real GPS signal without the help of A-GPS and EPO Data Shit!

On my way home I tested it all the way! I switched off and on "GPS satellites" without "Wi-FI & mobile network location" in the settings menu... and believe me or not....I was really surprised how fast it is now. Bevor I did that fix I had to wait more then twenty or more seconds to got a GPS signal...but this was always with A-GPS and EPO help!

Now I got my real GPS fix in two seconds on the balcony without the help of EPO and A-GPS!

You see...more satellites and a little bit better accuracy and Google Maps works flawless!
    Wohooooooooooooo!

Ok...I really must say...that a good Smartphone like a HTC, Samsung or Sony are much more faster in getting a good GPS Signal... but for a MTK based phone this is real fast now!

I hope that this will also work for your MTK device!??? If not it maybe depends on the bad built in GPS antenna of you device. But do not hesitate...give it a try!!!

    Cheers Joschi

Great Guide. Did you try it without rename the Files ? Only to uncheck the A-GPS and EPO, maybe this will give you the same Result ?!
If so, Root is not needed for the Fix.

And also, I thought you need to reboot the Phone after rename the Files ....

On 4.4.2 KitKat its not possible to disable A-GPS and EPO, if I´m right, you can do a normal fix.
I tried this on the Dg800 Doogee Valencia, which has 4.4.2, got my Fix after 2 Seconds, normally.

But, if anyone would try it on 4.2.x or 4.1.x and can confirm this works, it would be Great.
Thanks Joschi for this ! :)

You can delete the files if you want...it doesn´t matter.... but for potential backup it´s always better to keep them! :)

    You're my Hero!

I thought my new phone had a crappy GPS, but not at all!

    Works fine for me.

What else can we improve with MobileUncle?
