Why won't my generic USB gamepad work on my MK808B Plus?

I recently bought a MK808B Plus HDMI-stick. My version is the EC-MK808B with Realtek WIFI and Bluetooth. I have installed a custom 4.4.2 ROM (http://www.mediafire.com/download/jr1v2whtyamqicb/EC-MK808B_PLUS_SupeCeleron_1.4_ROM_RTL8723-EN.zip) but I can't for the life of me get a generic USB gamepad to work.

USB host is working, I can e.g connect keyboard, mouse and USB-storage stick.

The keylayout (Vendor_0079_Product_0011.kl) file for the specific controller I got from another HDMI-stick I have where the gamepad is working. I followed this guide to get it onto my device:http://fomori.org/blog/?p=1178

    Am I missing something?
